Women's Health
Women's health is different from men's due to biological, social and behavioral factors.
The fact that Gynecology and Obstetrics are practiced as independent
medical specialty indicates the uniqueness of women's health. Women's
biological factor contributes in large part to their health issues. Their
hormonal fluctuation determines their physical and emotional characters and
sometimes causes illness. This factor plays an important role in response to
a treatment and thus the outcome of a treatment.
Women have unique social status and responsibility.
Their financial status and family responsibility can have impact on their
overall health. Women may consume less alcohol and have less accidents, thus
reducing risks for certain health issues. On the other
hand, their sensitive emotion may put them in high risk of certain illness.
Traditional Chinese medicine and Women's Health
The history of Gynecology and Obstetrics in traditional Chinese medicine dated back to 2000 years ago, and first professional Chinese book on Gynecology and Obstetrics, “Jing Xiao Chan Bao”, was written in the 10th century. Since then, many TCM theories and clinical practice have been developed to address women’s health issues: menstruation-related problems, pregnancy-related illness, postpartum diseases, menopause syndrome and non-reproductive diseases such as cancers/tumors, cardiovascular disease, urinary tract infection/vagina infection, depression /anxiety. Although female hormones play an important role in these health problems, women don’t necessarily accept synthetic hormonal therapy due to side effects from hormonal replacement. Instead, women often look for help from natural therapies such as herbal medicine and acupuncture. Traditional Chinese medicine is only alternative treatment that has its unique medical system consisting of etiology, pathology, diagnosis and treatments. It is 1000 years of cumulative experience in women's health!!!. Traditional Chinese medicine thrives on its unique balance concept and few side effects.
How we successfully improve women’s health
While women’s health is mostly associated with their hormonal fluctuation,
it is affected by emotion as well. This is reflected in TCM treatment where physical imbalance and emotional factor
are addressed simultaneously. Unlike conventional medicine, Chinese medicine views each patient as unique person who
has unique need for her health. The fact that women`s health is unique during different period of life requires special
attention to their unique need in different age. For example, a 20 year-old young lady has different health issues than
one at age of 55. Even If they present same complaint as “heavy period”,
TCM treatment is different for different age of women, since the cause is different.
